How TSA PreCheck works & how to sign up

If you’ve traveled recently, you’ve probably noticed there’s a lane that moves much quicker at the security checkpoint.

It’s the lane for TSA PreCheck members, and the Transportation Security Administration says that about 99% of TSA PreCheck passengers wait less than 10 minutes at the security checkpoint. Another perk? TSA PreCheck passengers enjoy simpler screenings.

We look at the benefits of TSA Precheck, how you can enroll, and what to expect after you do.

What is TSA PreCheck?

The TSA PreCheck program was created to provide low-risk travelers with a smoother experience at the airport security passenger checkpoint. It’s open to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (sometimes referred to as green card holders).

TSA PreCheck is a convenient option for frequent travelers looking to save time during the airport security process. AAA partners with IDEMIA, the authorized TSA PreCheck enrollment provider since 2013. First-time enrollment is $78, which covers 5 years of participation if approved.

TSA PreCheck members are given a Known Traveler Number (KTN). Providing your KTN when booking your ticket will get a TSA PreCheck indicator placed on your boarding pass when you check in, which will let you use the expedited security lanes.

With TSA PreCheck, you can leave your bag of 3-1-1 liquids in your carry-on luggage during screening.

What are the benefits of TSA PreCheck?

  • VIP experience: Exclusive access to dedicated screening lanes at more than 200 U.S. airports.
  • Pack just once: No need to remove shoes, laptops, 3-1-1 liquids, belts, or light jackets.
  • Families welcome: Kids 17 and under tag along with enrolled parents/guardians for free.
  • Shorter waits: Most TSA PreCheck passengers wait in line for less than 5 minutes.

Who is eligible for TSA PreCheck?

TSA PreCheck is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and lawful permanent residents. Certain criminal offenses may make applicants temporarily or permanently ineligible.

How do you apply for TSA PreCheck?

The TSA PreCheck application process has 2 parts:

  1. Online application: Visit IDEMIA'S TSA PreCheck enrollment website and fill out a brief online application. After that, you’ll schedule an in-person appointment at an enrollment center.

Make sure the website where you’re submitting your application has an official .gov address. Any site with a URL that doesn’t end with .gov or that requires payment upfront to submit your TSA PreCheck application isn’t legitimate. The $78 TSA PreCheck enrollment fee is collected later at your in-person appointment.
  2. In-person appointment: Complete the less-than-10-minute enrollment process, which includes collecting your fingerprints and photo for the TSA background check. Be sure to bring documentation proving your identity and citizenship status. Not sure which documents to bring? The TSA offers an online tool that can tell you based on your personal details.

Appointments are conducted at enrollment centers around the country, including temporary pop-up events at select AAA branches.

Access to the expedited TSA PreCheck lane is granted via an indicator placed on your boarding pass.

How do you use TSA PreCheck?

Once you’ve received your KTN, your TSA PreCheck membership is good for 5 years and can be renewed online. Add it to any new or existing airline reservations to receive TSA PreCheck. Most airlines also offer the option to save your KTN in your online profile and automatically add it to new bookings.

Adding your KTN to your booking before or during check-in usually leads to a “TSA PreCheck” indicator being placed on your printed or electronic boarding pass. This can be the TSA PreCheck logo or a short phrase like “TSA PRECHK.”

Be sure to check for the indicator even if you’ve used the expedited lane many times before. The TSA may occasionally withhold it and instead screen you in the regular security lane as part of their security measures.

Does your whole group need to enroll in TSA PreCheck?

If traveling with a spouse, family, or a group, all adults need the TSA PreCheck indicator on their boarding pass. Adult travelers without it will need to go through the regular screening lane.

Members of the group who were granted TSA PreCheck access can proceed on their own or choose to go through regular screening with their companions instead.

What about passengers under 18?

Passengers ages 12 and under don’t need TSA PreCheck membership or a TSA PreCheck indicator on their boarding pass. As long as they are accompanied by an adult with a TSA PreCheck indicator, they can use the same expedited lane.

Children ages 13-17 can also use the TSA PreCheck lane without applying if they are with an adult with the TSA PreCheck indicator, but only if the child has the indicator on their own boarding pass as well. (This is a change from the previous policy and was announced in May 2023.)

While children don’t need to enroll in TSA PreCheck to use the lane with eligible adults, they are allowed to enroll, which might be useful if they frequently travel on their own.
