There are well over 100 crossover SUVs—an SUV body constructed on a unibody passenger-car platform—on the market today. Nonetheless, the Kia Telluride, which debuted as a 2020 model, merits special mention.
Part of the reason is the midsize Telluride’s updated rugged profile—it looks like it’s ready for a real adventure. Its 3.8-liter V6 delivers strong acceleration but below-average fuel economy (21 mpg combined, AWD). With 291 hp, the powertrain has the oomph to pull a 5,500-pound trailer. Ride quality is a bit firm but not objectionably so, and available AWD and decent ground clearance make mild off-roading an option.
The Telluride’s spacious cabin offers 3 rows of seating for up to 8 passengers, although the way-back seats are largely a kids-only affair. Fold down the rear seatbacks and you get a generous 87-cubic-foot cargo hold.
The Telluride comes with a long list of comfort and convenience features. Examples on our high-end test model include leather upholstery, a 12.3-inch touch screen, a smartphone charging pad, a 360-degree surround-view monitor, and a power-operated rear liftgate.
Factor in a host of advanced safety features, an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus rating, and Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, and you can understand why the Kia Telluride stands out from the crowd.
