Car review: Kia EV6 GT AWD

Skeptical about EVs? Kia’s EV6 could make you a believer. As a muscular wagon or a sleek SUV, the EV6 is ultramodern inside and out. Twin touch screens are artfully integrated into the dash. Interior materials—even recycled ones—are upscale. The seats are supportive, legroom is abundant, and the cabin stays library quiet as the EV6 glides down the road.

Acceleration ranges from quick (the entry-level model) to thrilling (the top-o’-the-line GT). The heavy battery pack beneath the cabin keeps the center of gravity low, which reduces body roll, making the EV6 super fun on a twisty road.

Driving range is an EPA-rated 218 miles for an AWD GT but rises to as much as 310 miles for other versions. Cutting-edge 800-volt charging capability enables an 80% charge on a 350-kW fast charger in less than 20 minutes.

All EV6s are loaded with high-tech safety features. Other add-ons include a key fob that lets you magically ease the EV6 in or out of a parking space from outside the car.

Cargo room is a bit skimpy, and the $7,500 federal tax credit doesn’t apply because the EV6 isn’t assembled in the U.S. Nevertheless, the EV6 demonstrates why the future of EVs should be very bright, indeed.
