As you turn onto the brick-lined Main Street of St. Charles, you must slow down, which is fitting in this historic hamlet that begets leisurely getaways. Follow in the footsteps of explorers and statesmen as you check out this charmer that brims with shopping opportunities and a full slate of festivals.

What to do in St. Charles

When Meriwether Lewis and William Clark stopped in St. Charles to gather supplies for their expedition in 1804, it might have been a harbinger for the city’s future as a shopping mecca. Peruse 125-plus shops on and off Main Street for antiques, apparel, crafts, and collectibles in restored buildings. It’s the kind of place where a dog could be lazing near the cash register.

Just a stone’s throw from Main Street is Frontier Park, nestled along the Missouri River. Admire a 15-foot bronze monument that includes Lewis, Clark, and Clark’s Newfoundland dog, Seaman. Learn more about their adventure at the park’s south end in the Lewis and Clark Boat House and Museum, which includes a host of exhibits; displays about Native Americans, including Sacagawea, the Shoshone guide and translator who aided the explorers; and a full-size replica of their keelboat based on Clark’s drawings.

You won’t find Clark’s sketches at the Foundry Art Centre, but you will be able to view an ever-changing collection of works by area artists. New exhibitions are unveiled often in this repurposed train car factory. Meet the artists and enjoy entertainment during First Fridays events from 5–8 p.m.

In addition to being an early center of trade, St. Charles served as the state’s first capital from 1821–1826, and the First Missouri Capitol State Historic Site transports you to that era. Stepping into the restored chambers in the 2-story brick building, you can imagine legislators debating the state’s first laws.

Iconic villains of history and folklore—including Lizzie Borden and the Big Bad Wolf—will haunt the city’s streets during Legends & Lanterns: A “Spirited” Journey Through Halloween History on Saturdays and Sundays from October 15–30, plus October 28. Don’t miss the collection of scarecrows at Kister Park on Main Street and the Victorian Mourning Museum in Frontier Park’s train depot.

Holiday Parade

During the St. Charles Christmas Traditions festival, encounter holiday figures like Ebenezer Scrooge and Jack Frost as you stroll the festively decorated historic district. Victorian carols, multiple Santas, and chestnuts roasted over open fires add to the fun. Scenes from A Christmas Carol come to life on Wednesday evenings during the festival, which is held on Wednesdays and Fridays–Sundays from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve.
