The BMW 430i Convertible is lovely to drive with a daring exterior

Launched last year, BMW’s second-generation 4 Series cars are sportier renditions of the automaker’s 3 Series sedan. The 4 Series is available in coupe and convertible versions, and the cars’ daring exterior styling, including a colossal “double kidney” grille (described as “ghastly” in the motoring press), has polarized BMW fans.

There’s little that’s controversial, however, about the 4 Series interior, which features the fit and finish and sumptuous materials expected in an expensive car. The 430i’s controls are easy to use: A touch screen and simple knobs and buttons operate such items as the radio volume and seat heaters. Android and Apple phone integration, navigation, and safety systems such as automatic emergency braking and blind-spot warning are standard.

Kudos also for the 430i’s performance and handling. “M” versions (BMW’s factory hot rods) have powerful 6-cylinder engines, but the base turbo 4-cylinder, attached to an 8-speed automatic, puts out 255 hp and is strong and smooth enough to be mistaken for a 6. Responsive steering, plus a remarkably solid body structure for a soft-top car, made each test-drive a pleasure. RWD is standard; AWD is optional.

Overall, a 4 Series BMW is lovely to drive, if not so lovely to behold.
